Quote paragraph

In the novel Flight by Sherman Alexie there are multipe examples of opression and cruelty by the bad people, as mentioned in Martin Luther King jr.'s quote, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” One major example is when Zits (Hank) is with Art when Art shoots an indian. This example relates to the quote because Zits wanted to stop Art when he was shooting the Indian, but didnt because he was scared, that he would think he was a traitor. The importance of this example is that zits (Hank) could have done something, but he didnt because he was worried about his own safety more than the person's safety that was in danger. In this case, even though Zits didnt even take part in the event he did nothing to stop it which makes him just as guilty. This type of situatuion occurs all over the world every day and still we, good people do nothing about it.

Martin Luther King jr.'s qoute response

Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people” is a great example of the novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The novel is about black maids living in Jackson Mississippi, 1962, during this time period Jackson Mississippi was known for treating black people horribly. Mrs. Skeeter is a women in the novel who stands by and watches her friends treat their maids as if they don't belong in this world. Mrs. Hilly, one of Skeeters friends, convinces all of her friends that black people have diseases and they need to have their own bathrooms. Most of the ladies show a confusion in the matter but then soon believe their good friend Hilly. Mrs. Skeeter knows what Mrs. Hilly is doing is a lie and she feels bad about it but she doesn't say anything about it to her friend. For not saying anything Mrs. Skeeter was just as much part of the problem as Hilly was. Another example is Louvenia, a women in the novel. Her life falls apart when her grandson Robert was attacked for using a white bathroom. When people in the white community heard about the incident no one even cared, the only people who cared were the people who noticed that hurting people for using different bathrooms was horrible, and they didn't say anything. The people who didn't stand up for Robert were just as much to blame as the people who did the actual beating. The novel took place along time ago but are society still struggles with racism today.

Paragraph Response

In the novel Flight by Sherman Alexie references to the quote, “ The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people” said by Martin Luther King Jr. In this novel a boy named Zits who is a foster boy with the ability to travel in time into other peoples bodies uncontrollably. In one of his travels he is a little boy in a Indian camp whos voice box has been slit by a U.S. Soldier, zits said “my voice has been taken away” ( pg. 64 ) to him self. While in this body he has the knowledge of zits as well as the Indian boy, zits knows that in a hour there will be captain Custer and his 100 U.S. Calvary coming to destroy the Indian camp. Zits may have had no voice but he could have gone out of his way to inform the Indian camp leader, he could have at least tried to lead them away from the camp to safety. Zits is not a bad person but his laziness in not warning the Indian camp leader could have saved lives. The silence of zits lead to the deaths of the innocents.

Quote Response Writing

In the book The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the quote “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people” said by Martin Luther King Jr. is well demonstrated In the novel. Rosaleen the black housekeeper in the Owen household made a poor decision and insulted three men who happened to be a few of the most racist men in the town. Rosaleen was sent to jail because a black women insulting white men was unspoken of at this point in society. When she was locked up in jail the guard allowed the three men into her cell to brutally abuse her. When people asked what happened he stated that she took a hard fall. This is an perfect example of the quote from Martin Luther King Jr. The ultimate tragedy was not from the three men who beat up Rosaleen, it was the silence of the guard who let them into her cell and covered for them when he knew how wrong it was. Even through he wasn't the one to do the damage, he was just as much to blame. Every day people believe that they are not at fault for the problems going on around them but most of them don't have the courage to stand up and do something about it or fight for what they believe in, and that's the real problem.

Paragraph Response
Martin Luther King Jr.'s words, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people,” is a powerful statement that rings true of some of the things that happen in our lives and communities and is strongly demonstrated in the novel Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin. John Howard Griffin the author and main character is a middle aged white man living in Mansfield, Texas in 1959. Frustrated by his inability as a white man to understand the black mans experience Griffin makes a drastic decision. He decides to change the colour of his skin with medical treatment and a sunlamp to temporarily become a black man. Griffin is so shocked at what he sees in the mirror that he feels alone and becomes nearly depressed. Of course Griffin is expecting hardship, oppression and racism but he is surprised to the extent of it. Everywhere he goes he experiences difficulties and insults, the word “Nigger” is tossed around casually. People throw stuff at him from passing cars, its hard to find a job and a water source or a restroom for a black to use. A young white boy chases him for some time, no clerks will cash any of his travellers checks and bus drivers are so rude. He decides to go farther South into Mississippi where its heard that is is even worse for blacks there. He stays with his white friend P.D. A newspaper man that strongly believes everybody is equal. All together Griffin finds that black communities seem run down and and hopeless. He stops taking the medication and lightens his skin, he goes back to the places he was as a black man and the whites treat him with much respect, the black hate and fear him, but when he was a black man whites treat him as though he were a rock or non-living and the blacks treat him with kindness and warmth.

The novel “The Absolute True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie, shows us that Rowdy is not only a bully but Junior's best friend. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people,” describes however mean people may be towards others its almost worse for the good people to stand by and let it happen; an event that occurs in the novel. Rowdy is Junior's “frenemy” because throughout the story her protects Junior, but also hates Junior because of the fact that he left the rez. And when everyone is bullying Junior Everybody including rowdy, everyone chooses to be bystanders.

Quote Paragraph Response

“Flight”, a novel by Sherman Alexie, demonstrates how heartless and inhumane people can be and even worse how unwilling bystanders are to help, giving an image to Martin Luther King Jr.'s words “ the ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” When Zits transformed into his father and drunkenly stumbled around the alley he describes his surroundings: “Nobody looks at me as I stagger past. I'm not an uncommon sight. I'm a beaten bloody Indian,” shining light upon the fact that no one seems to care, or if they do they are too cowardly to help. Zits claims his father is not an uncommon sight; people see so many others in this situation and start considering it to be normal. People become tolerant to the sight and numb to the guilt of ignoring others in need. Bystanders are doing no harm to the victims directly, but there conscious refusal to help causes just as much pain.

Martin Luther King Jr. Quote

The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.”

What this quote means is that it's horrible when there is oppression and cruelty but whats worse is when no one does anything to stop it. The people who stand around watching something bad happen and don't do anything about it are just as bad as the people doing it. It is only those who act against cruelty that can truly be called good.
How this relates to the novel “The Help” is that coloured people are considered lesser then the whites. Treated like stray dogs or slaves. White people were so naive, thinking that coloured people had diseases and were bad people who didn't deserve to be treated like any other person. There were people, white and coloured, who knew it was wrong but were too scared to stand up and say so because of the consequences. People are people no matter what they look like and everyone deserves to be treated equally and with respect. Thank God for the people who risked their lives to make a difference and because of them they changed the world.

Quote Response Paragraph

In Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin, the quote: "The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people" relates to when John was walking around town trying to find a place where he could cash in his checks. Nobody (ex: the bad people in the quote) would help him because, since he was living as a black man, and looked like a black man, everyone thought he had stolen the checks, until he meets a white lady (ex: the good people in the quote) who is willing to help him cash in his checks. Another example is when John is on the bus and is getting ready to get off at his stop, the bus driver opened the bus door when he wanted to get off but just kept driving past his stop, he drove for ten blocks past the bus stop and only stopped when a group of white people were getting on the bus, that's when John was able to quickly get off, but he was still ten blocks away from where he asked to get off.

Quote Paragraph Response

The quote from Martin Luther King Jr, “ The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people,” is demonstrated in the novel “Flight” by Sherman Alexie. The book has many events where the good does not do anything but watch or ignore the bad that surrounded them. Zits transforms into a drunk homeless Indian, who is beaten up multiple times and has a serious health condition which he could die from. People around him would either ignore him or run away from him because he was a drunk homeless person that gives attitude to everyone. Even though he needed medical attention he was ignored by many people and also got beaten up. It shows how the good don't care or don't think about the homeless because they don't think that it's their problem to deal with or that they are a lower priority and that their problems are more important. But if the good did care and didn't do anything about it maybe because they are to afraid to approach the person because they are scared of what might could happen to them or don't have the courage to do so. The worst thing a person may do is that they don't do anything about the problem and watch it happen until it gets too late.

Quote Response Paragraph

Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people,” is a significant statement that’s importance comes across in our every day lives. This message Is strongly demonstrated in the novel The Secret Life of Bees by Kidd Monk. In this novel, the character Rosaleen Daise, a strong hearted black women, is arrested for pouring snuff spit on three white men's shoes. The police officer that arrests Rosaleen is Avery Gaston, his nickname is “Shoe”. He drives Rosaleen to the police station. When they arrive at the jail, the three men are waiting. They demand that Rosaleen apologize. When she refuses, one hits her on the head with a flashlight. Mr. Gaston says nothing. Once Rosaleen is put in a jail cell, Mr. Gaston lets the three men into the cell. They beat up Rosaleen and once again Mr Gatson says and does nothing to stop them. Rosaleen ends up with severe injuries and is taken to the hospital. Avery Gatson doesn't directly hurt Rosaleen but he let it happen. His silence hurt Rosaleen more than her injuries. Even if you are an innocent bystander and watch injustices happen before your eyes, you are becoming part of the problem instead of providing a solution.

The Ultimate Tragedy is the Silence of the Good People

The novel “ The Help” by Katheryn Stockett is a perfect reflection of Martin Luther King Jr.'s statement that “ The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty but the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” The treatment of the black community in 1962 was horrible, but the novel focuses on the treatment of the coloured maids in Jackson, Mississippi. Aibileen has been working for Mrs. Leefolt, cleaning her home, cooking for her, and raising her child. Aibileen clocks in at 6 in the morning and leaves at 4 in the evening. Mrs. Leefolt decided that Aibileen was unfit to use the same bathroom as her after a heated discussion with her bridge group, for she was scared of catching disease. So in the effort to prevent her family from catching a coloured disease she build Aibileen her own coloured bathroom outside in the garage. The reason for building the coloured bathroom alone was degrading and insulting, but no one sticking up for Aibileen, no one from the bridge club who heard the discussion decided to say anything against the idea. It ruined her self esteem as a human being and her dignity as a maid and part of their family. We also learn in the novel of a you boy named Robert, he worked for a construction company, he accidentally used the white bathroom not knowing their was a sign permitting him from using the bathroom. He was run off the property, by two white men and beat with a tire iron. Just because he used a white bathroom instead of the coloured bathroom. All the people who saw what happened never protested, no one at the scene tried to stop the beating. Robert was in the hospital for three weeks and ended up with serious injuries and came out blind. Loosing his sight because he used the white bathroom. He was charged and came out as the bad guy. The bad people are at fault as much as the one's who stand by and watch. A life could be save, a young man could still have his sight and a maid could still have her dignity and self confidence.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote "The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people," ties greatly to the novel The Secret Life Of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. In this novel there is a fierce-hearted black woman named Rosaleen. When Rosaleen is thrown in jail after insulting 3 of the most vicious racist men in town, the men go to the jail to beat her up. There is a policeman at the jail but he does nothing to stop them. The policeman, Mr. Gatson, is not considered a bad man but he may as well be because he does not go to Rosaleen's aid. He stands around quietly not daring to speak up to stop the men from beating her. As a result of lack of courage in Mr. Gatson, Rosaleen is beaten to a pulp and must go to the hospital where her wounds can be treated. Mr. Gatson is a prime example of how the silence of good people is worse than the cruelty of the bad, just like Mr. King Jr. explains in his quote. The silence of Mr. Gatson allowed an innocent person to be beaten to the brink of death, if he were to have stood up to the bad people he would have changed everything. The silence of the good people such as Mr. Gatson, is the "ultimate tragedy" in this crime.

Martin Luther King quote

Martin Luther King Jr's quote “The ultimate tragedy is not depression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” is about how badly black people were treated without any support from anyone.
In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd references to the quote "The ultimate tragedy is not depression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people" by Martin Luther King. Lily Owens decides to runaway from her home in Sylvan, North Carolina with her house keeper Rosaleen. Before their adventure Lily had to break Rosaleen out of jail because Rosaleen had dribbled the juice from her snuff jar on this man's shoes. When Lily arrived at the jail they told her that they had to take Rosaleen to the hospital in Sylvan. Lily saw the three men that got the snuff juice on their shoes in the jail cell with Rosaleen beating the life out of her. Lily was shocked that this was happening right in front of her. The police officer Mr. Gatson, who was white, had let the men into the cell and allowed them to beat her up. Mr. Gaston just stood there in silence as Lily watched as Rosaleen was on the ground with the three men circling around her, continuously throwing punches and kicks to her face . Mr. Gaston hadn't commited a crime himself, but the fact that he just stood there as someone was in need of help, he should be in jail instead of Rosaleen.

_______________________________________________________

Martin Luther King Jr.'s words “The ultimate tragedy is not the depression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people” Is a quote he mentioned about the harsh way black people get treated without anyone saying anything. In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd examples of depression and cruelty were explored throughout this book. When Lily decided to head into Tiburon, South Carolina- the town written on the back of her mother’s photograph. On her adventure out of town, a detour arose… Lily had to go bail Rosaleen out of jail. When Lily arrived at the jail, she got told Rosaleen has been taken to the Sylvan Memorial Hospital. Lily quickly headed over to the hospital, when Lily got there; she travelled through the black patient wing that was across from the white patient wing. Lily's first devastating experience with racism happened when Lily saw Rosaleen being beaten. Lily couldn't believe what had happened. The white police officer had let three white men into the jail cell to beat up Rosaleen. She was badly injured but what hurt more was the silence that came out of the white police officers mouth.
