Martin Luther King jr.'s qoute response

Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people” is a great example of the novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The novel is about black maids living in Jackson Mississippi, 1962, during this time period Jackson Mississippi was known for treating black people horribly. Mrs. Skeeter is a women in the novel who stands by and watches her friends treat their maids as if they don't belong in this world. Mrs. Hilly, one of Skeeters friends, convinces all of her friends that black people have diseases and they need to have their own bathrooms. Most of the ladies show a confusion in the matter but then soon believe their good friend Hilly. Mrs. Skeeter knows what Mrs. Hilly is doing is a lie and she feels bad about it but she doesn't say anything about it to her friend. For not saying anything Mrs. Skeeter was just as much part of the problem as Hilly was. Another example is Louvenia, a women in the novel. Her life falls apart when her grandson Robert was attacked for using a white bathroom. When people in the white community heard about the incident no one even cared, the only people who cared were the people who noticed that hurting people for using different bathrooms was horrible, and they didn't say anything. The people who didn't stand up for Robert were just as much to blame as the people who did the actual beating. The novel took place along time ago but are society still struggles with racism today.

  1. I like how you went into detail about what happened to the maids, it shows that you had a great understanding of the book and know how to describe things that happen.
