Martin Luther King Jr's quote “The
ultimate tragedy is not depression and cruelty by the bad people but
the silence over that by the good people.” is about how badly black
people were treated without any support from anyone.
In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd references to the quote "The ultimate tragedy is not depression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people" by Martin Luther King. Lily Owens decides to runaway from her home in Sylvan, North
Carolina with her house keeper Rosaleen. Before their adventure Lily
had to break Rosaleen out of jail because Rosaleen had dribbled the
juice from her snuff jar on this man's shoes. When Lily arrived at
the jail they told her that they had to take Rosaleen to the hospital
in Sylvan. Lily saw the three men that got the snuff juice on their
shoes in the jail cell with Rosaleen beating the life out of her.
Lily was shocked that this was happening right in front of her.
The police officer Mr. Gatson, who was white, had let the men into the cell and
allowed them to beat her up. Mr. Gaston just stood there in silence
as Lily watched as Rosaleen was on the ground with the three men
circling around her, continuously throwing punches and kicks to her face . Mr. Gaston hadn't commited a crime himself, but the fact that he just stood there as someone was in need of help, he should be in jail instead of Rosaleen.
You did a good job of making a clear image. I like how you mentioned that Mr.Gatson should be in jail instead of Rosaleen, even though he didn't really commit the crime!
