Choice Project: Character Sketch on Zach Taylor

Zachary Taylor is a teenager who has been working for his Godmother August Boatwright at the Black Madonna Honey Company. He’s a junior and attends the local Black high school where he plays football. Zach’s dad left him when he was little, and his mom works as a lunchroom lady at the same school where June teaches. Zach has lived in Tiburon all his life, and is never without the love and support of the Boatwright sisters. He has grown up with many advantages, but also disadvantages because of the color of his skin.

Zach is an attractive young black man. He has defined features, he has broad shoulders, a narrow waist, short-cropped hair and gets a one sided dimple when he smiles. Zach plays Football, he’s athletic, fast, and strong.

The difficulties of being African American inspire Zach to imagine a better, more productive future for himself. Zach hopes to become a Lawyer. He’s smart, he gets straight A’s in school. He’s hardworking and very determined. Through out the book you see Zach's determination and hard work through all the jobs and responsibility he takes on such as the honey farm and  becoming a lawyer. When he gets arrested as a result of his race, and for refusing to turn in a friend, he becomes more empowered, more driven, and more focused to make a better future for himself.

Zach does not let his race act as a negative force in his life. Lily’s different skin color does not prevent Zach from falling in love with her, nor does his skin color prevent him from dreaming about one day becoming a lawyer. Zachary Taylor is a very inspiring character.

  1. The whole thing holds up well, what I really like is the distinction between the paragraphs, each serving its own purpose. You describe Zach in an acute detail which shines on your work. Well done.

  2. You described his visuals very well and I can imagine Zach would be like in person. Good Job!
