August
Boatwright
August Boatwright is the owner
of the Black Madonna Honey company; she is a black woman who grew up
in Virginia. She studied at a black college and became the
housekeeper for Lily’s mother when she was younger. August wanted
to become a teacher, but she moved to Tiburon to take over the
beekeeping business. August has a true love for bees, for life, and
for love.
August is a unique, middle aged
black woman, who is tall for her age. She lives in a pink house in
Tiburon, South Carolina with her two younger sisters, May and June.
Together these three women are known as the ‘Calendar Sisters.
August now works as an experienced and educated beekeeper on her
28-acre farm.
August is a rare, accepting and
wise woman. Her kindhearted soul and trustworthy qualities do not let
her shy away from the opportunity to care for a young white girl with
an older black woman. August has chosen not to marry because she does
not want to give up her freedom and independence. August is the type
of person that is easy to talk to. When Lily was ready to talk about
her mother, August was ready to listen. She is a very successful
business woman and offers her help and advice whenever she can.
August is the heart and soul of Tiburon, South Carolina.
August becomes a ‘motherly
figure’ to Lily, her support and love saves Lily, just when she
needs it the most. August is larger-then-life to Lily and acts as a
guided light. She helps Lily realize the importance of love and
spirituality, as well as beekeeping. August manages to do all of
this, while dealing with racism and prejudices, which
African-Americans are faced within this time period.
I liked how you talked about the many strengths that august has and then at the end tied it into how she has to go through it being a African American woman, this supported your previous statements very well.
ReplyDeleteI like how much description you put into augusts personality, it really explained her importance in the story.
