In the book The Secret Life of Bees
by Sue Monk Kidd, the quote “The ultimate tragedy is not the
oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by
the good people” said by Martin Luther King Jr. is well
demonstrated In the novel. Rosaleen the black housekeeper in the Owen
household made a poor decision and insulted three men who happened to
be a few of the most racist men in the town. Rosaleen was sent to
jail because a black women insulting white men was unspoken of at
this point in society. When she was locked up in jail the guard
allowed the three men into her cell to brutally abuse her. When
people asked what happened he stated that she took a hard fall. This
is an perfect example of the quote from Martin Luther King Jr. The
ultimate tragedy was not from the three men who beat up Rosaleen, it
was the silence of the guard who let them into her cell and covered
for them when he knew how wrong it was. Even through he wasn't the
one to do the damage, he was just as much to blame. Every day people
believe that they are not at fault for the problems going on around
them but most of them don't have the courage to stand up and do
something about it or fight for what they believe in, and that's the
real problem.
The event you choose from your novel for the quote is a really good example and I also really like how you ended your paragraph.
